Our Mission

1. To stimulate interest in good music and its appreciation among the individual members and throughout the community.
2. Help young musicians financially through three Young Artist awards and one scholarship at San Jose State University.
3. Support the local musical arts organizations with time and money.

Young Artist Awards

• Each year the SJMSC presents three Young Artist Awards to deserving local artists.
• The winners are announced in March, and the awards are presented at the Young Artist Award Concert in April
• Prizes: First Place $1,000.00, Second Place $800.00, Third Place $600.00
  

Winners Will Be Presented In Concert

• Sunday, April 29, 2012, 7:00 PM
• SHERMAN CLAY PIANOS (New facility to be determined)
• Recipients of the 1st Place award should be prepared to present two 20 minute segments of the program at the April Concert.
  2nd Place, 30 minutes & 3rd Place, 20 minutes
• Awards are presented at this time & award is forfeited if winner cannot perform in concert

Auditions

• Sunday, February 12, 2012, 12:00-5:00 PM
• West Valley College, 14000 Fruitvale Ave, Saratoga, CA 95070 Room MU-12 (Choral Rehearsal Room)

Eligibility

• Applicants must be within the ages of 18 to 30 years as of audition date
• Must reside within the approximate area indicated by: South: Monterey, North: Sacramento, East: Hwy 99 (both sides), West: Pacific Ocean

Requirements

• Contestants must provide own accompanist and appear at the audition at their own expense.
• There is no fee for this competition.
• Winners are selected for their performing ability.
• Choose your first audition number from your varied repertoire, and be prepared to perform all other selections from the pieces included on your application. Audition time is 15 minutes. Judges may stop you mid-piece due to time.
• All selections must be performed from memory.

Young Artist Award Winners

Past winners include:

• Jon Nakamatsu, an internationally renowned concert pianist, in 1987, when he was just 18 years old.
• Dan Levitan, principal harpist in the Silicon Valley and Marin Symphonies, was the 1980 winner.

San Jose State University Scholarship

• Each year the SJMSC presents the San Jose State University Scholarship ($1,000.00) toward tuition at San Jose State University to a full time student enrolled at SJSU as a Music Major. The runner-up receives $250.
• The winner presents a one-hour program for the club in March of the following year.
